Our Story
Explore RMF's Legacy

The Reading Musical Foundation (RMF) was founded in 1926 when financial crisis threatened the existence of the 13-year-old Reading Symphony Orchestra and the Reading Choral Society that had been providing choral music events for nearly 51 years. Incorporated in 1927, the foundation was established through the efforts of Mr. Jerre H. Barr and fourteen other interested men and women from Reading.
Its mission was to provide adequate community support for the major musical organizations in Reading. At that time, it was also proposed that the group work to establish a series of free public band concerts and assist in furthering musical education and appreciation in the schools.
Working mainly from their living rooms, this group of professionals and area businesspersons raised $30,000 to form the core of the RMF endowment.

Our Values

What we stand for
Access for Every Child
We believe that no child's musical potential should go unrealized due to circumstance. Every young person who wants to learn music deserves the opportunity to do so. RMF is committed to removing barriers and opening doors to music education for all.
Music Builds Whole People
Learning music goes far beyond playing notes — it cultivates creativity, discipline, self-perseverance, and self-expression. These are skills that serve students throughout their entire lives, in and out of the concert hall. We see music education as education for the whole person.

The Power of Collaboration
Music is inherently a team endeavor. Whether in an ensemble, a choir, or a band, people learn to listen, contribute, and create together. We believe that the spirit of teamwork cultivated through music extends far beyond the stage.
Live Music Strengthens Community
Live performance has a unique power to bring people together and foster a shared sense of belonging. We believe that a vibrant music scene makes Greater Reading a more connected, attractive, and thriving place for everyone — residents and visitors alike.
